Much More Than Music

John Owens looks forward to the chic cocktails and relaxing treatments on offer at the Magic Lougeabout festival later this month

The days, hours and seconds are counting down till the beginning of the Magic Loungeabout, and things are really starting to get interesting. Described as 'The hottest thing to do in Yorkshire this summer' by The Times, it is less than a month till the likes of Gary Numan, Morcheeba and Ladytron step up on stage and wow audiences.
Set in a pastoral idyll with views over the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, the weekend of the 30th August will begin what the organisers are calling a 24 hour picnic - except this is one picnic that won't feature either stale sandwiches or an uncomfy squat in the trees. The Magic Loungeabout looks set to distinguish itself from its larger, grubbier relatives with an attention to detail and quality that will run through every aspect of the proceedings. Take a look at the spa facility, for instance. With a team that has perfected its wares over the years at The Big Chill, there will be six different massages on offer. Whether you want to relax with the Japanese discipline of Shiatsu or enjoy aromatherapy, the choice is all yours. To make sure you get a place call 07974 437 449.
That isn't even the half of it. The range of food on offer means that there is something for everyone - those with a penchant for dubiously reheated burgers may have to stay away. On one hand there is Soulful Kitchen, which serves tangines, falafel and salads, and on the other there is La Vache, with gourmet steak sandwiches being served from a vintage Citroën. Then again, you could always ignore both of those and go for the sweet toothed chocolate parlour. Choices, choices. Either way, you'd be best to wash it down with coconut juice from freshly cracked coconuts, also available.
For those in need of something a bit stronger, the cocktail bar has also got plenty of tricks up its sleeve. Working alongside Chambord, who also sponsor London fashion week, organisers are making sure that it's the perfect place to relax between performances by combining tasty drinks with a view to die for. And that's not to say that the music itself isn't worth hanging around for. DJs will come from the makers of the 'Late Night Tales' compilations, which has included contributions from Zero 7 and Air and has successfully mixed musical credibility with sales of over a million. What with all these distractions and temptations, you'd be forgiven for missing the odd act!
